Covidien Research Grants
Focus of research proposals: Applications are solicited in one of the following two focus areas:
Childhood Obesity - Prevention and/or Treatment
The epidemic of childhood overweight and obesity mandates study in the prevention and treatment of this disorder. Basic, clinical and population research studies are solicited to address the prevention and/or treatment of childhood obesity. Pilot/Feasibility research and/or planning grants for future clinical research studies are accepted.
Weight Gain After Bariatric Surgery
The recognized problem of weight regain following weight loss in patients treated with gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and biliopancreactic diversion +/- duodenal switch is not fully understood. Proposals are solicited for mechanistic studies of this phenomenon and/or intervention studies (pharmacologic, behavioral or combination) addressing the problem of weight regain after bariatric surgery. Proposals may be for pilot/feasibility clinical research, basic research or planning grants for future clinical research studies are accepted.
HOW TO APPLY FOR A GRANT
STEP 1
- Submit a one-page letter of intent cover page (MS Word or PDF) downloadable from the link below
- One-page letter of intent outlining the proposed research project
- Prepare an NIH-style Biosketch to accompany the letter of intent cover page and project description (MS Word or PDF) downloadable from the link below.
- Materials may be submitted in MS Word or PDF format via email attachment or fax by Monday, November 9, 2009 @ 11:59pm Eastern Time
Important dates:
- Letter of Intent Submission Deadline: November 9, 2009
- Full Proposal Request Notification: December 7, 2009
- Full Proposal Submission Deadline: December 14, 2009
- Grant Recipients Notified: January 18, 2010
- Grant Start Date: February 1, 2010 (50% of grant paid to recipient)
- First Progress Report: August 1, 2010
- Second Progress Report: February 1, 2011 (25% of grant paid to recipient upon successful completion of goals to date)
- Third Progress Report: August 1, 2011
- Research Completed: February 1, 2012
- Final Report and Financial Statement Due: May 1, 2012 (25% of grant paid to recipient upon successful completion of final report and financial statement)

STEP 2
Successful applicants will be announced on December 7, 2009 and will be invited to submit a proposal of no more than 4 pages (plus one page for budget and justification, plus biosketch pages) by December 14, 2009.
The application should contain the following sections:
- Background and Relevance
- Research Design
- Methods
- Timeline and Schedule of Deliverables
- Budget and Budget Justification
- Biosketch (2 page maximum) for each Investigator
Available funding:
Two awards will be funded. Each award is for $50,000 and may be expended over a period of up to two years. Total funding pool is $100,000.
Eligibility Criteria:
Eligible applicants: Membership in The Obesity Society
Type of research eligible for award: Basic, Clinical and Epidemiologic research proposals are accepted.
Applications will be scored on the following criteria:
- Responsiveness to the intent of the announcement
- Novelty of the research
- Feasibility of producing meaningful research results within two years of the award
- Scientific design
- Feasibility of meeting budgetary constraints
- Adequacy of proposed timeline and schedule of deliverables

Post award requirements
Awardees are required to submit semi-annual progress reports and final report including a statement of financial expenditure.
