 Bob Kushner OfficialDear Society Members,

As incoming president of The Obesity Society, I am honored to serve the society and am excited about the initiatives we are planning for this coming year. I will devote future newsletters to sharing our plans and keeping you informed of society activities.  However, in this newsletter, I want to acknowledge a few individuals who deserve a special 'thank-you' and to recognize all of the award winners from last year.

Firstly, I wish to acknowledge our immediate past president, Dr. Gary Foster, for his exceptional leadership of the society and the accomplishments that were achieved over the past year. Under Gary's leadership, we adopted a 5-year strategic plan that will guide the future of our society in three major directions--research, clinical care, and advocacy.

And a special thank-you to Dr. Jackie Stephens (chair) and Dr. Jack Yanovski (co-chair), who pulled together an outstanding annual conference in Phoenix. It was one of the most successful meetings to date--we received nearly 1000 abstracts and published 965. The meeting brought together more than 2000 attendees in a time of economic cutbacks. The science, research and clinical presentations were outstanding--a tribute to the distinguished speakers who participated as faculty. Next year's conference in Washington DC, October 24-28, 2009 is expected to be as exciting. Please mark your calendars now!

On behalf of The Obesity Society, I wish to acknowledge all of our awardees and sponsors and their accomplishments. Once again, congratulations!

Warm Regards.

Robert Kushner, MD
