The Obesity Epidemic! Exploring Emerging Strategies for Weight Control and Risk Reduction
Supported by Orexigen
Sunday October 25, 2009 7:15-9:00PM
Treatment of obesity poses complex management problems for clinicians. In this program, clinicians will review the data on risk assessment and evidence of the health benefits of weight loss that helps drive therapeutic decisions. The array of treatment options – from lifestyle choices to medications to surgical intervention – will be reviewed, with practical solutions for addressing barriers to treatment, as well as other practice issues. With a limited number of approved weight loss medications currently available, clinicians will also look ahead to emerging therapeutic options designed to control food intake and encourage weight loss.

Stop Cardiometabolic Risk Before It Stops You: Exploring New Advances in the Medical Management of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes
Supported by Amylin-Lilly
Monday October 26, 2009
Diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity are closely related metabolic processes that significantly increase a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease. In this program, clinicians will discuss how insulin resistance contributes to these cardiometabolic diseases and how understanding these relationships can influence disease management. The dynamics of the incretin system and mechanism of incretin-based therapies will be discussed, to offer a state-of-the-science update on an important pathway in treating diabetes. Clinicians must synthesize understanding of pathophysiology with therapeutic action, and the panel will discuss management strategies for controlling weight, controlling lipid and glycemic levels to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
